Boards and Commissions

There are many opportunities for citizen involvement in Town of Telluride decision making.  Citizen volunteers sit on the following boards and commissions:

 

The Board of Adjustments and Appeals

Board members act as an appeal board with the authority to grant variances, adjustments and interpretations of the Building Codes.

 

The Commission for Community Assistance, Arts and Special Events

This commission establishes the yearly special event calendar; recommends annual grant funding for arts and special events to the Town Council and develops networks to support and nurture festivals, performing arts, visual arts and special events.

 

The Telluride Election Commission

The Election Commission has charge of all activities and duties required by Charter, ordinance or statute relating to the conduct of Town elections.  In any case where election procedure is in doubt, the Election Commission shall prescribe the procedure to be followed.

 

The Telluride Ethics Commission

The Commission has the authority to issue advisory opinions; provide interpretations of the Ethics Code; investigate alleged violations of the Ethics Code and recommend to Town Council the imposition of sanctions, remedies and/or criminal enforcement of civil action regarding violations.

 

The Historic and Architectural Review Commission

The Historic and Architectural Review Commission is directed to issue Certificates of Appropriateness prior to the issuance of permits pertaining to the erection, demolition, moving, renovation, restoration, addition to or alteration of any structure or sign.  It also recommends designation of structures, significant landmark interiors and areas of outstanding historic and architectural significance; proposes preservation standards and policies, and maintains inventories of historically and/or architecturally significant structures and areas.

 

The Marshals Citizens Advisory Board

The board is directed to heighten the awareness of the citizens of Telluride to public safety issues that affect the health, welfare and safety of the community, promote community partnerships between government, the business sector and citizens to identify and solve problems, and to promote communication and education between the community and the marshals department.  It makes recommendations to the Town Manager, Town Council and the Chief Marshal concerning the provisions of police protection, policies, procedures, and services within the Town.

 

The Open Space Commission

It is the duty of this Commission to establish priorities and criteria for Town Council adoption for the acquisition of open space and for the management and maintenance of all properties acquired. It is directed to make recommendations to the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Ecology Commission regarding open space impacts of applications filed under the Town's and County's land use codes. It is also directed to review open space elements of comprehensive, master, and area plans and make recommendations to the Town Council concerning any open-space-related changes to plans.

 

The Parks and Recreation Commission

It is the duty of Parks and Rec to interpret the needs and desires of the community for recreation and parks services. It is directed to provide an opportunity for community comments and suggestions for improvements to parks and recreation programs, to develop programs and improvements and to create and update a multi-year master plan.

 

The Planning and Zoning Commission

The Planning and Zoning Commission has the authority to grant approvals concerning: uses permitted on review; zoning variances; conceptual, preliminary and final Planned Unit Developments and preliminary and final subdivisions.  It also is directed to initiate amendments to the Land Use Code for Town Council review. It is directed to make, adopt and recommend Master Plans to the Town Council.

 

The Ecology Commission

The Ecology Commission shall address human-wildlife interactions of concern, as identified by the Town  Council.  Such work shall address mechanisms that reduce or eliminate interactions which may pose a threat to wildlife and the safety of the general public.
