Public Works Evaluating Telluride’s Main Sewer Line

Highway 145 bike path temporarily impacted by wastewater bypass pipeline

(October 27, 2023) – Telluride, CO --- This week, the Town of Telluride Public Works Department and its contractor, Southwest Systems, are utilizing closed-circuit television (CCTV) to inspect the main sewer line from the Town of Telluride to the Telluride Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (TRWWTP). The goal of the effort is to assess the condition of the 40-year-old pipeline, remove debris through jet cleaning, identify and eliminate a source, or sources, of water infiltration into the system, and establish a maintenance program to keep the sanitary sewer pipe network in working order.

The CCTV and jet cleaning project is expected to conclude within two weeks and will provide Public Works with an accurate map of the sewer systems, an analysis of the sewer pipes and manholes, and a clear understanding of service lines that are producing significant fats, oils, and grease (FOG). Public Works will then prioritize the rehabilitation or replacement of certain sewer pipes and evaluate the processes necessary to minimize excavation, disruptions, and costs.

Working along the Highway 145 bike path, Public Works and Southwest Systems are bypassing wastewater flows, pumping wastewater out of the main pipeline and into a temporary pipeline, to create space for a camera to move through the main line. The task, which began on Monday, is taking longer than expected because the sewer main is partially blocked by mineral buildup and other debris that must be removed to allow the camera to proceed.

“The process has already revealed crowbars, lumber, calculators, chunks of concrete, toys, diapers, flushable wipes that do not degrade like regular toilet paper, and more,” said Environmental & Engineering Division Manager Karen Guglielmone. “None of these items should ever be put down the sink or flushed down the toilet. A sewer system is only designed to transport human waste and standard toilet paper. Anything else gets stuck and creates problems that require this type of deep utility work before they lead to larger issues at our Wastewater Treatment Plant.”

The bike path along the spur is expected to be impacted by the sewer line work through Friday, November 10, or longer depending on future unforeseen circumstances and delays. Public Works will capitalize on the path closure, working with a contractor to complete crack repair along the bike path as well. Bikers and pedestrians are encouraged to use alternate routes or exercise extreme caution when moving through the area.
