Town Council Approves First Reading of Monthly Water & Wastewater Billing Cycle

Rate study shows a 5% water, 20% wastewater rate increases needed in 2024

(November 29, 2023) – Telluride, CO --- The Town Council of the Town of Telluride has approved the first reading of an ordinance changing the water and wastewater billing cycle from bi-monthly to monthly beginning January 1, 2024. As the Town’s water and wastewater rates have increased over the years, residents have expressed a preference for smaller monthly payments rather than a bi-monthly bill. Public Works staff confirmed that monthly billing would also allow customers to catch any inconsistencies in water usage sooner, such as one indicating a leak.

Additionally, after discussing the findings of a 2023 water and wastewater rate study conducted by Burns McDonnell, Town Council approved the first reading of an ordinance increasing water and wastewater rates effective January 1, 2024. The study provided a 5-year financial plan evaluating the rates needed to meet future operating and capital costs of the utilities. The rate study showed that a 5 percent water rate increase and a 20 percent wastewater rate increase are needed in 2024.

Both ordinances will go to a second reading on Tuesday, December 12, 2023. To submit public comment, please email clerkcomments@telluride-co.gov or review the agenda to attend in person during the action item on December 12.

The proposed 2024 Town of Telluride Water & Wastewater Rates can be found in the November 28 Town Council Packet by visiting bit.ly/totcouncil
