Town of Telluride Earns Distinguished Budget Presentation Award

Town’s budget awarded for the ninth year while striving to improve transparency and clarity

(July 17, 2023) – Telluride, CO --- The Town of Telluride has been recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) as a recipient of the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 2023 Town of Telluride Budget. The GFOA honors budget award winners for preparing high-quality budget documents that meet program criteria and striving to improve budget transparency in their community.

The award represents a significant achievement by the entity. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. To receive the budget award, the entity had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity's budget serves as:

  • A policy document
  • A financial plan
  • An operations guide
  • A communications device

Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories and in the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories to receive the award.

When a Distinguished Budget Presentation is granted to an entity, a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation is also presented to the department designated as being primarily responsible for having achieved the award.  This has been presented to Finance Director Kailey Ranta, as well as all members of the Finance Department.

There are over 1,700 participants in the Budget Awards Program.  The most recent Budget Awards recipients, along with their corresponding budget documents, are posted quarterly on GFOA’s website.  Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.

“Each of the last nine years, the Town has put together an incredibly comprehensive budget document to ensure clear, transparent communication of the Town’s operating budget, as it is the primary decision-making document of the Town of Telluride,” said Finance Director Kailey Ranta. “We look forward to continuing this level of transparency and budget excellence in the upcoming budget season.”
