Design Guidelines and Standards Code Amendment Review Begins

Town staff to present reviews and recommendations at HARC, P&Z, and Town Council

(May 3, 2024)—Telluride, CO --- As part of Town Council's 2024 Goals and Objectives, the Town of Telluride Historic Preservation Department initiated a review of the Design Guidelines and Standards for Building in Telluride in September 2023. The Design Guidelines committee charged with the review is comprised of three members of the Historic & Architectural Review Commission (HARC) and Historic Preservation staff. The committee is prepared to bring the proposed updates to upcoming public meetings of HARC, Planning and Zoning (P&Z), and Town Council.

The design guidelines are the community's standards and policies for the design of the built environment. They are committed to preserving historic resources, enhancing the overall design character of the Town, and enhancing livability. The guidelines further provide the Town, through HARC, a basis for making informed, consistent decisions about proposed new construction and alterations to buildings and sites in the community. The guidelines were last updated in 2015 and reformatted in 2016.

The committee held eight working meetings between September 2023 and February 2024, during which each document section was reviewed and edited. Those redline edits were then presented to the HARC board for review at the regular HARC meetings on October 18, November 15, December 13, February 21, and March 20.

The reviews and recommendations will be presented to HARC on Wednesday, May 15, and to P&Z on Thursday, May 23. Town Council will review the recommendations and address the possible code amendment in two readings on Tuesday, June 4, and Tuesday, June 24.

The committee, staff, commission members, and elected officials encourage public comment by attending meetings or emailing clerkcomments@telluride-co.gov. ABOUT TELLURIDE
Nestled amidst the majestic San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, Telluride's captivating narrative is deeply rooted in the ancient legacy of the Ute tribe, the valley's original inhabitants, who crafted their summer camps along the San Miguel River, naming the land "The Valley of Hanging Waterfalls." In the late 1700s, Spanish explorers traversed the rugged terrain, laying the groundwork for subsequent exploration and settlement. A fervent mining boom followed, igniting a rush of prospectors to the region, culminating in the founding of Telluride in 1880. Telluride's allure as a hub of opportunity attracted fortune seekers, bolstered by the arrival of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad and groundbreaking innovations like the hydroelectric power plant in Ames. Set in a box canyon amid forested peaks at the base of the popular Telluride ski-and-golf resort, the town’s historic district houses landmarks like the Sheridan Opera House and the Telluride Historical Museum while playing host to culture, music, arts, outdoor recreation, and festivals with unrivaled views and dramatic locale.
