Town Council Initiates Nationwide Search for New Town Manager

Columbia Ltd to assist in recruiting, outreach, and evaluation

(May 23, 2024) – Telluride, CO --- Town Council has voted unanimously in favor of initiating a nationwide search for a new Town Manager with the help of Columbia Ltd. The decision follows the formal resignation of Town Manager Scott Robson, effective Tuesday, June 25.

Town Council met this morning during a special meeting to discuss a contract with Columbia Ltd’s CEO and Founder Drew Gorgey to assist with the recruitment process for a new Town Manager and for consideration of the job search goals, including writing the job description, deadlines for applications, requirements for applicants, selection procedures, and the time frame for appointing the new Town Manager of the Town of Telluride. The search committee will consist of all seven members of Town Council.

“The Town is very fortunate to have Drew’s understanding of the challenges we face in mountain towns and expertise in identifying exemplary candidates to fill this critical role in the past,” said Mayor Teddy Errico. “Council is aligned in that we must find the right hire to carry the baton, leading our major projects forward and keeping Telluride on track economically and socially as one of the greatest mountain towns I know.”

According to Gorgey, the search process will be comprehensive and inclusive, seeking input from council and staff to ensure that the selection aligns with the town’s strategic goals and community expectations. Town Council will oversee the recruitment process, including nationwide advertising, outreach to professional networks, and thoroughly evaluating all candidates.

In advance of yesterday’s special meeting, Columbia Ltd. interviewed the members of Town Council and Town Department Heads to better understand what each desire in future finalists for the appointed role.

“I think my biggest new takeaway from all the interviews yesterday is how on the same page your department heads and all of you are,” said Gorgey. “Collectively, you want to capture all the advances you've made in the last 2 years, in the last 6 years, and in the last 12 years and not lose a step.”

ABOUT TELLURIDE
Nestled amidst the majestic San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, Telluride's captivating narrative is deeply rooted in the ancient legacy of the Ute tribe, the valley's original inhabitants, who crafted their summer camps along the San Miguel River, naming the land "The Valley of Hanging Waterfalls." In the late 1700s, Spanish explorers traversed the rugged terrain, laying the groundwork for subsequent exploration and settlement. A fervent mining boom followed, igniting a rush of prospectors to the region, culminating in the founding of Telluride in 1880. Telluride's allure as a hub of opportunity attracted fortune seekers, bolstered by the arrival of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad and groundbreaking innovations like the hydroelectric power plant in Ames. Set in a box canyon amid forested peaks at the base of the popular Telluride ski-and-golf resort, the town’s historic district houses landmarks like the Sheridan Opera House and the Telluride Historical Museum while playing host to culture, music, arts, outdoor recreation, and festivals with unrivaled views and dramatic locale.
