FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Housing Needs Assessment Community Survey Mailed

Four-thousand household sample to receive bilingual survey, employers & public to be surveyed soon

(July 19, 2024) – San Miguel County, CO --- The Towns of Mountain Village and Telluride, and San Miguel County are working with the San Miguel Regional Housing Authority (SMRHA) to conduct a Regional Housing Needs Assessment. Economic & Planning Systems (EPS) and RRC Associates have been contracted to conduct the market analysis, which will describe the current need for affordable housing within a multi-jurisdictional area that meets the actual workforce demand in San Miguel County.

A community survey, available in English and Spanish, has been mailed to 4,000 households within San Miguel County and surrounding communities to capture commuter input, including Rico, Ridgway, Log Hill Village, Paradox, Redvale, Nucla, and Naturita. Recipients of mailed surveys are encouraged to respond within 10 days by returning their paper copies with the prepaid return envelope or online through the URL within the survey.

An online survey will open on Monday, July 29, for San Miguel County residents and commuters who did not receive the mailed survey. Participants can submit contact information for a chance to win one of three $100 grocery gift cards.

Next week, EPS and RRC will also survey a sample of employers doing business in San Miguel County for input and feedback regarding their housing needs.

Residents, workers, commuters, and retirees in the region are encouraged to participate to help inform the future of housing within and throughout San Miguel County. For more information surrounding the Housing Needs Assessment, please visit bit.ly/smchousingneeds.

ABOUT TELLURIDE
Nestled amidst the majestic San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, Telluride's captivating narrative is deeply rooted in the ancient legacy of the Ute tribe, the valley's original inhabitants, who crafted their summer camps along the San Miguel River, naming the land "The Valley of Hanging Waterfalls." In the late 1700s, Spanish explorers traversed the rugged terrain, laying the groundwork for subsequent exploration and settlement. A fervent mining boom followed, igniting a rush of prospectors to the region, culminating in the founding of Telluride in 1880. Telluride's allure as a hub of opportunity attracted fortune seekers, bolstered by the arrival of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad and groundbreaking innovations like the hydroelectric power plant in Ames. Set in a box canyon amid forested peaks at the base of the popular Telluride ski-and-golf resort, the town’s historic district houses landmarks like the Sheridan Opera House and the Telluride Historical Museum while playing host to culture, music, arts, outdoor recreation, and festivals with unrivaled views and dramatic locale.
