[ARCHIVED] Public Works to Clean and Inspect Main Sewer Line

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Public Works to Clean and Inspect Main Sewer Line

Bike path impacted by wastewater bypass August 19 through early September

(August 17, 2024) – Telluride, CO --- Beginning Monday, August 19, the Public Works Department and its contractor, Southwest Systems, will jet clean and inspect the main sewer line from the Town of Telluride to the Telluride Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (TRWWTP). After cleaning and inspection are complete, Public Works will evaluate the processes necessary to minimize excavation, disruptions, and costs while rehabilitating or replacing certain sections of sewer pipe.

Working along the Highway 145 bike path, Public Works and Southwest Systems are bypassing wastewater flows, pumping wastewater into a temporary pipeline to create space for a Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) camera to move through the main line. The jet cleaning and inspection project is expected to conclude within two weeks. As such, the bike path along the spur is expected to be closed from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm and again from 4:00 to 6:00 pm through Friday, September 6.

The process will prepare the 40-year-old pipeline to be lined, eliminating any sources of water infiltration. Public Works will then establish a maintenance program to keep the sanitary sewer pipe network in working order.

Public Works will take advantage of the bike path closure to continue repairing cracks in the path. Bikers and pedestrians should exercise extreme caution when moving through the area and are advised to use alternate routes until the project concludes.

ABOUT TELLURIDE
Nestled amidst the majestic San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, Telluride's captivating narrative is deeply rooted in the ancient legacy of the Ute tribe, the valley's original inhabitants, who crafted their summer camps along the San Miguel River, naming the land "The Valley of Hanging Waterfalls." In the late 1700s, Spanish explorers traversed the rugged terrain, laying the groundwork for subsequent exploration and settlement. A fervent mining boom followed, igniting a rush of prospectors to the region, culminating in the founding of Telluride in 1880. Telluride's allure as a hub of opportunity attracted fortune seekers, bolstered by the arrival of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad and groundbreaking innovations like the hydroelectric power plant in Ames. Set in a box canyon amid forested peaks at the base of the popular Telluride ski-and-golf resort, the town’s historic district houses landmarks like the Sheridan Opera House and the Telluride Historical Museum while playing host to culture, music, arts, outdoor recreation, and festivals with unrivaled views and dramatic locale.
