[ARCHIVED] Telluride Free Box Moving to New Location November 4

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Telluride Free Box Moving to New Location November 4

Historic staple heading to Town-owned property to improve maintenance and upkeep

(October 3, 2024) – Telluride, CO --- A beloved piece of Telluride history, the Free Box, will soon move to a new location at the Voodoo Employee Rental Housing Project at 151 S. Willow Street on Monday, November 4. After nearly 50 years of providing a space for the community to share usable goods, the historic staple is relocating to a Town-owned location to simplify management and maintenance.

The Free Box began in 1975 when a resident left a box of clothing outside the Lost Branch Health Food Store and has grown into a cherished community resource. Over the years, it has seen many transformations from its humble beginnings to today’s iconic fixture with shelves and cubbies, providing a space for residents to exchange everything from clothing to household items.

As Telluride evolved into a major resort destination in the early 1980s, the Free Box became the subject of debate, with the town attempting to remove it. Determined community members quickly restored it, solidifying its place in town history. Today, it remains a symbol of goodwill, community spirit, and sustainability.

Why the Move?

The Free Box is currently located on private property, but with the new owners planning to open a speakeasy, the Town of Telluride decided to move it to town-owned property. The new location will feature improvements, including a covered structure to protect items from the elements, enhanced organization, and additional space dedicated to used books, shoes, hangable items, sporting goods, and more.

“The Free Box is more than just a place to drop off or pick up items – it’s a symbol of Telluride’s generosity and sustainable spirit,” said Free Box Crew Leader Becky Boehm. “This move is an important step in preserving its legacy while making sure it remains a well-maintained and respected community resource. We are excited about the new location, where we can better manage it and ensure it continues to serve the town into the future.”

News Rules and Guidelines

The Free Box is a valued community asset, unfortunately, the current site has seen an increase in improper use, with some residents using it as a personal trash dump. Moving forward the Town is asking residents to only leave truly usable items that would benefit others. Strict rules will be in place including:

  • No furniture, trash, hazardous materials, broken items, food or electronics.
  • Cameras will monitor the site to prevent illegal dumping, with fines imposed for violations.
  • Parking in the area will be limited to 15 minutes for loading and unloading only with parking rules being strictly enforced.

Preserving the History

To honor the historic Free Box, pieces of the structure will be donated to significant locations and organizations throughout Telluride, including the Telluride Historical Museum, KOTO Radio, and Telluride Ski Patrol. Any other organizations or residents interested in keeping a piece of the Free Box history are encouraged to email Free Box Crew Leader Becky Boehm at bboehm@telluride-co.gov

ABOUT TELLURIDE
Nestled amidst the majestic San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, Telluride's captivating narrative is deeply rooted in the ancient legacy of the Ute tribe, the valley's original inhabitants, who crafted their summer camps along the San Miguel River, naming the land "The Valley of Hanging Waterfalls." In the late 1700s, Spanish explorers traversed the rugged terrain, laying the groundwork for subsequent exploration and settlement. A fervent mining boom followed, igniting a rush of prospectors to the region, culminating in the founding of Telluride in 1880. Telluride's allure as a hub of opportunity attracted fortune seekers, bolstered by the arrival of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad and groundbreaking innovations like the hydroelectric power plant in Ames. Set in a box canyon amid forested peaks at the base of the popular Telluride ski-and-golf resort, the town’s historic district houses landmarks like the Sheridan Opera House and the Telluride Historical Museum while playing host to culture, music, arts, outdoor recreation, and festivals with unrivaled views and dramatic locale.
