(May 29, 2025) – Telluride, CO — The Town of Telluride and the Historic & Architectural Review Commission (HARC) are now accepting nominations for the 2025 Historic Preservation Awards. These awards celebrate projects that preserve and enhance the character of Telluride’s National Historic Landmark District.

Established in 2008, the Preservation Awards recognize individuals, organizations, and businesses that thoughtfully rehabilitate, restore, or maintain Telluride’s historic buildings and neighborhoods. Awards may be presented in the following categories:

  • Rehabilitation & Restoration – Recognizes restoration of rated structures to an earlier or original appearance, with potential adaptive reuse, in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.
  • Most Compatible Addition – Honors additions or alterations to rated structures that are clearly new yet compatible in size, scale, and design.
  • Most Compatible Infill – Recognizes new construction that fills gaps in the streetscape while respecting the surrounding historic context.
  • Continuing Preservation – Celebrates long-term care and preservation of rated structures that have been maintained at a high standard over time.

“Preservation efforts help Telluride stay connected to its roots,” said Historic Preservation Director Kristen Clothier. “These awards are our way of recognizing the projects that protect the past while keeping our community vibrant.”

Eligible projects must have started after January 1, 2021, and received a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) before May 30, 2025. All nominations must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2025, and include a completed nomination form, a statement of achievement, letters of support, and before-and-after photos, among other materials.

The awards are open to residential, commercial, and mixed-use projects within the Town of Telluride. Anyone may submit a nomination, including self-nominations, with owner approval when applicable. Multiple nominations by the same applicant are allowed.

ABOUT TELLURIDE
Nestled amidst the majestic San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, Telluride's captivating narrative is deeply rooted in the ancient legacy of the Ute tribe, the valley's original inhabitants, who crafted their summer camps along the San Miguel River, naming the land "The Valley of Hanging Waterfalls." In the late 1700s, Spanish explorers traversed the rugged terrain, laying the groundwork for subsequent exploration and settlement. A fervent mining boom followed, igniting a rush of prospectors to the region, culminating in the founding of Telluride in 1880. Telluride's allure as a hub of opportunity attracted fortune seekers, bolstered by the arrival of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad and groundbreaking innovations like the hydroelectric power plant in Ames. Set in a box canyon amid forested peaks at the base of the popular Telluride ski-and-golf resort, the town’s historic district houses landmarks like the Sheridan Opera House and the Telluride Historical Museum while playing host to culture, music, arts, outdoor recreation, and festivals with unrivaled views and dramatic locale.
