[ARCHIVED] Free Box to Close Overnight Beginning Monday, December 22

.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Free Box to Close Overnight Beginning Monday, December 22

Change follows ongoing vandalism, misuse, and unlawful activity

(December 22, 2025) – Telluride, CO – The Town of Telluride will begin closing the Free Box overnight from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., starting Monday, December 22 in response to ongoing vandalism, misuse, and unlawful behavior at the site.

The overnight closure is intended to address repeated issues, including illegal dumping, damage to the structure, and behavior that has created safety concerns for the surrounding area. The Free Box will remain open and available to the public during daytime hours.

“This change is necessary to protect a community resource that is meant to be safe, accessible, and respectful for everyone,” said Chief Marshal Josh Comte. “The Free Box works best when it is used as intended.”

The Free Box is intended for the exchange of clean, usable items such as clothing and household goods. It is not a disposal site. Dumping trash, large items, or prohibited materials is illegal and places an added burden on staff.

The area is monitored by security cameras. Illegal dumping, vandalism, or other unlawful activity may result in citations or charges. The Town will continue to monitor activity at the Free Box and evaluate whether additional changes are needed.

Community members are encouraged to report vandalism or illegal dumping to the Telluride Marshals Department by emailing marshals@telluride.gov or calling non-emergency dispatch at (970) 249-9110. For more information about appropriate use of the Free Box, visit bit.ly/totfreebox.

ABOUT TELLURIDE
Nestled amidst the majestic San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, Telluride's captivating narrative is deeply rooted in the ancient legacy of the Ute tribe, the valley's original inhabitants, who crafted their summer camps along the San Miguel River, naming the land "The Valley of Hanging Waterfalls." In the late 1700s, Spanish explorers traversed the rugged terrain, laying the groundwork for subsequent exploration and settlement. A fervent mining boom followed, igniting a rush of prospectors to the region, culminating in the founding of Telluride in 1880. Telluride's allure as a hub of opportunity attracted fortune seekers, bolstered by the arrival of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad and groundbreaking innovations like the hydroelectric power plant in Ames. Set in a box canyon amid forested peaks at the base of the popular Telluride ski-and-golf resort, the town’s historic district houses landmarks like the Sheridan Opera House and the Telluride Historical Museum while playing host to culture, music, arts, outdoor recreation, and festivals with unrivaled views and dramatic locale.
