[ARCHIVED] Statement from Mayor Teddy Errico on behalf of the Telluride Town Council

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Statement from Mayor Teddy Errico on behalf of the Telluride Town Council

“On behalf of the Town Council of the Town of Telluride, I would like to formally apologize for the distracting interruption due to a member of our council last night who was carelessly unmuted on Zoom. The language used was inappropriate and did not reflect the professionalism and respect that our community expects and deserves from its elected officials.

We also recognize that this behavior interrupted a community member’s right to comment freely and without antagonization. A right we care deeply for and honor without bias.

Regardless of the circumstances, it is council’s responsibility to always conduct ourselves appropriately, especially during such critical moments for our community. We regret that this derailed a moment of unity in which we were working together to navigate this difficult and uncertain period for our local economy.

I would like to reiterate, as I have stated many times in the last month, the Town does not have a position in the private dealings of this labor dispute. Our members of council have every right to voice opinions or support as they see fit, but in doing so are not acting on behalf of the Town of Telluride, but rather, as independent residents and community members. We regret that this incident reflected poorly on the Town of Telluride and assure you that staff is taking the matter seriously.

Counciperson Permakoff is currently dealing with a critical family emergency and will be issuing an apology on her own as soon as she is able. We ask that all respect her and her family’s privacy during this trying time.

I also want to be clear with our community that, under the Town’s rules, this incident does not constitute as grounds for removal from office. While we hold ourselves to high standards and take this matter seriously, Councilmembers do have individual free speech rights, and this situation does not rise to a violation of the Town’s Ethics Code. The Town’s Home Rule Charter allows removal only in very limited circumstances, such as resignation, incapacitation, loss of residency, consistent failure to attend meetings, or local petition to recall, and none of those apply here.”

ABOUT TELLURIDE
Nestled amidst the majestic San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, Telluride's captivating narrative is deeply rooted in the ancient legacy of the Ute tribe, the valley's original inhabitants, who crafted their summer camps along the San Miguel River, naming the land "The Valley of Hanging Waterfalls." In the late 1700s, Spanish explorers traversed the rugged terrain, laying the groundwork for subsequent exploration and settlement. A fervent mining boom followed, igniting a rush of prospectors to the region, culminating in the founding of Telluride in 1880. Telluride's allure as a hub of opportunity attracted fortune seekers, bolstered by the arrival of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad and groundbreaking innovations like the hydroelectric power plant in Ames. Set in a box canyon amid forested peaks at the base of the popular Telluride ski-and-golf resort, the town’s historic district houses landmarks like the Sheridan Opera House and the Telluride Historical Museum while playing host to culture, music, arts, outdoor recreation, and festivals with unrivaled views and dramatic locale.
