Water Conservation
Our beautiful mountain community thrives on the precious resource of water. Despite our snowy winters, Telluride is part of a high-altitude ecosystem where water conservation is vital for sustaining our environment, ensuring a reliable water supply, and promoting responsible stewardship for future generations.
The Town of Telluride Water and Wastewater Division is committed to maintaining our domestic water system for in-home use, landscape irrigation, and fire protection, while also promoting sustainable water practices.
Why Water Conservation Matters in Telluride
Even in a region known for its abundant snow and water, our delicate ecosystem and water resources are precious and finite. Voluntary water conservation helps us:
- Protect Our Natural Environment: Support the health of local rivers, streams, and wildlife that depend on stable water flows.
- Ensure Future Supply: Help maintain a reliable and sustainable water supply for all community needs, even during drier periods.
- Reduce Energy Use: Less water used means less energy expended to treat, pump, and deliver water to your home or business.
- Support Community Resilience: Responsible water use contributes to the long-term vitality and sustainability of our cherished mountain town.
Understanding Water Loss vs. Water Conservation
While both contribute to water waste, it's helpful to distinguish between water loss (unintended waste) and water conservation (intentional reduction of use).
Preventing Unnecessary Water Loss (Fixing Leaks & Inefficiencies):
- Install Leak Detection Systems: Consider installing smart water leak detection systems and master valves on your irrigation systems to quickly identify and address leaks.
- Regular System Checks: Periodically inspect your irrigation system for broken sprinkler heads, leaks, or inefficient watering patterns.
- Promptly Fix Leaks: Even a small drip can waste thousands of gallons annually. Address leaks in toilets, faucets, and outdoor hoses immediately.
Practicing Water Conservation (Mindful Usage):
We encourage all residents and visitors to adopt these simple, yet impactful, water-saving habits:
- Shorter Showers: Aim for quick showers (5 minutes or less).
- Full Loads Only: Run your dishwasher and washing machine only when they are full.
- Turn Off the Tap: Don't let the water run unnecessarily while brushing your teeth, shaving, or scrubbing dishes.
- Efficient Toilets: Check for silent toilet leaks and consider installing low-flow models.
- Water Wisely: Water your lawn and garden only when necessary, and always during the coolest parts of the day (early morning or late evening) to minimize evaporation.
- Choose Drought-Tolerant Plants: Select native or adapted plants that thrive with less water.
- Mulch: Apply mulch around plants to retain soil moisture and reduce evaporation.
- Sweep, Don't Spray: Use a broom to clean driveways and sidewalks instead of a hose.
- Car Washing: Wash your car with a bucket and sponge, or visit a commercial car wash that recycles water.
- Minimize Decorative Water Features: Consider turning off or reducing the use of exterior decorative water features, fountains, and artificial streams.
