Marshal's Office - Ticketing & Towing

3
  • Contact the Marshal's Department at (970) 728-3818 during regular business hours, or the Montrose County Dispatch Center at (970) 249-9110 after hours. Be prepared to give a description of your vehicle, the location and approximate time when it was parked. If it is determined that your vehicle was impounded for snow removal, or some other legal reason, you will be directed to respond to the Marshal's Department offices located at 134 South Spruce Street. You will then be provided with paperwork and instructions on how to arrange for the release of your vehicle.

The Marshal's Department contracts towing services with private providers and payment for the tow / impound is made directly by the registered owner of the vehicle to the tow company. Impound fees will have to be paid before a vehicle will be released. Daily storage fees begin to accumulate after the first 24 hours that a vehicle has been in police custody, so it is recommended that the recovery of a towed vehicle not be delayed.

A parking ticket will accompany the impound paperwork and a court date is provided should an appeal of the circumstances be desired. Failure to pay the parking ticket prior to the court date, or failure to appear at the court date, will result in a doubling of the parking fine.

Contact the Marshal's Department at (970) 728-3818, or come to our offices at 134 South Spruce Street. You will be provided with a detailed list of the outstanding and overdue parking violations for the vehicle. The overdue fines will have to be paid prior to the release of the vehicle. A boot fee will also be imposed, although this is usually less than the cost of a vehicle impound fee. Vehicles that remain booted for greater than 72 hours will be towed and held in a police impound lot pending payment of parking fines. Daily storage fees shall accrue after the first 24 hours of impoundment.

Parks and Recreation - Campground

  • We have configured our camping software to optimize our campsites by site type to maximize our occupancy and reduce the need to piecemeal together a reservation.

At the time of the initial search, the system is searching all options to make that request happen. In the event of an optimization, the site type will remain the same (Premium, Standard, Walk-in), and the site length will not decrease (30', 25', 20'). Site #'s will automatically lock in 3 days prior to your arrival. Please note: If you choose to piecemeal a reservation together outside of the system optimizing, your reservation cannot be altered by the staff or the software.

All internal moves will be coordinated with P&R office staff daily,

    • For businesses located outside Telluride, the fee depends on how many employees will actually work in Telluride — not the total number of employees in your business. Please include this number on your application.

    • For short-term rental licenses, the cost depends on the license type and the number of sleeping rooms in the property (including lofts and nooks).

For more details, check the Fee Structure or see Telluride Municipal Code Section 6-1-20.

    Town Clerk - Business Licensing
  • All business licenses expire on December 31st each year and must be renewed by January 1st.

Payment for the renewal is due by January 6th every year.

    Town Clerk - Business Licensing
  • No. Being registered with the State of Colorado does not replace the need for a Telluride business license or sales tax license if you have a physical presence or taxable activity in town.

    Town Clerk - Business Licensing
  • Non-profits don’t need a business license in Telluride (per Telluride Municipal Code 6-1-50).

However, depending on what your event involves, you might still need to get a zero-fee tax license to collect and pay taxes to the Town.

For bigger festivals or if you’re unsure whether you need a business license, please check the Festival Event Business License Policy for more details.

    Public Works - E&E
  • Some of the most pervasive weeds in this area are Dames Rocket, Oxeye Daisy, Yellow Toadflax, Cypress Spurge, White Top, and Scentless Chamomile. When weeds are hand-pulled, it is best to put them in plastic bags and then into the trash. Do not compost the plant material as the seeds may be viable.

The San Miguel County Weed Coordinator can help you identify and control these weeds.

Bears!

3
    • Always keep your polycart (trash can) locked.
    • Bag trash tightly to contain odors.
    • Clean polycart with a bleach solution.
    • Keep pet food inside.
    • Keep barbecue grills clean.
    • Never leave food in a vehicle.
    • Lock downstairs doors and windows.

If bears do not forage successfully in town, they will then move on to areas that provide them with the food they need to hibernate through the winter. Houses have been “broken into” by bears looking for food. Imagine the unpleasant surprise of coming home to a bear eating ice cream out of your freezer and the mess they created to locate the tastiest items!

Keeping the town clean also serves to minimize skunks and rodents who thrive near humans because of our messy ways.

    Bears!
  • Colorado Parks and Wildlife has many great resources about safely recreating in Bear country.  Please look through this information carefully before you head out to hike or camp so you can safely enjoy the areas in and around Telluride.

    Bears!
  • Keeping our trash secured and out of reach of bears is one of the best ways to keep bears from becoming habituated to humans and becoming aggressive around human food sources.  The fines are in place to help encourage everyone to do the right thing when it comes to keeping bears and people safe.

Business FAQ's

14
    • Residential License – If your property is in the Residential Zone (outlined in red on the The Residential Zone Map), you can only apply for a Residential License.

    • Classic or Limited License – If your property is outside the red zone (in the Non-Residential Zone), you may apply for either a Classic License or a Limited License, depending on how many nights per year you rent it out.

    • Lodging License – This is only for hotels, motels, boardinghouses, or lodges that:

      • Are owned by one entity and have an on-site lobby, or

      • Use a time-share or fractional ownership model for their units.

    Business FAQ's
  • Please let the STR Program Administrator know when your unit is sold.

Short-term rental (STR) licenses can’t be transferred to a new owner, so once your license is closed, the new owner must apply for their own license.
Only one license can be active for a unit at a time.

You can’t pay taxes until the month is over, and your account can't be closed until your taxes have been paid.

    Business FAQ's
    • The Town of Telluride collects its own taxes.
You must file and pay Telluride taxes through Rentalscape, and you must do this separately for each property you own or manage.

    • State and County taxes (for Colorado and San Miguel County) must be filed through the SUTS system (Sales and Use Tax System) with the State of Colorado.
You can find more info or file online at: https://tax.colorado.gov/sales-use-tax
Or call the Colorado Department of Revenue at: (303) 238-7378

    • The total tax rate for short-term rentals is 17.22%:

      • 11% goes to the Town of Telluride

      • 6.22% goes to the State of Colorado and San Miguel County

To see a full breakdown of short-term rental taxes, visit the Sales, Use & Excise Tax Information section on our website.

    Business FAQ's
  • The Town of Telluride doesn’t have any agreements with rental websites like Airbnb or VRBO to collect local taxes. Even if they say they collect taxes for you, you still need to pay Telluride’s local taxes yourself.

You should check with the platform you’re using to find out if they collect State or County taxes for you. No matter what, it’s your responsibility to make sure all required taxes are paid through the SUTS (Sales and Use Tax System).

    Business FAQ's
  • If you have a Limited License and go over the 29-night limit, you’ll need to upgrade your license. Contact the STR Program Administrator as soon as possible to find out what steps you need to take to stay in compliance.

    Business FAQ's
  • Short-term rental (STR) licenses can’t be transferred between properties, and there’s a limit on how many you can hold. A person or business can’t have a financial interest in more than two STR licenses total.

If you want to switch one of your licenses to a different property, you’ll need to contact the STR Program Administrator to close one of your existing licenses before applying for a new one.

Also, since licenses are non-transferable, the license fee doesn’t carry over—you’ll need to pay the full fee for the new license.

    Business FAQ's
  • Starting July 1, 2025, all short-term rental (STR) forms must be completed and submitted online as part of your application.

If any of the forms require notarization, you’ll also need to complete a Bulk Notary Form and upload it along with the notarized documents during the online application process.

    Business FAQ's
  • Refunds will not be given once your application is complete and you’ve paid for your short-term rental (STR) license.

Make sure you choose the correct license type and only pay if you plan to use the license. Double-check everything before submitting your application and payment.

    Business FAQ's
  • The Town does not currently limit the total number of short-term rental (STR) licenses.

To stay updated on any changes to Town rules or policies, please sign up for notifications.

    Business FAQ's
  • If you only plan to rent the property for fewer than 30 total nights per year, a Limited License might be a good option.

Be sure to review the details for each license type to choose the one that fits your situation.

    Business FAQ's
  • No. The Limited License allows up to 29 rental nights per calendar year, and any unused nights do not roll over to the next year.

    Business FAQ's
  • However, if you add anyone else to the ownership (even within an entity), you’ll need to close your current STR license and apply for a new one. The license fee does not transfer, so you’ll need to pay for the new license in full and submit a new Financial Ownership Disclosure form as part of your application.

    Business FAQ's
  • Yes. You’ll need to apply for both:

    • A Short-Term Rental (STR) License – this comes with a fee and requires you to collect and remit taxes.

    • A Long-Term Rental License – this is a zero-fee license required by the Town for tracking purposes, but no taxes are due for long-term rentals (30 days or more).

Even though you’ll have two licenses, you only pay for and remit taxes under the STR license.

    Business FAQ's
  • No. To keep three or more STR licenses, you must keep all of them current and active.

If any of your licenses lapse, are closed, or become inactive, you will lose the right to hold more than two, and you won’t be able to get the extra license(s) back later.
